20. Poverty in Hong Kong: Nearly 20% or about 1.5 million people in Hong Kong live below the poverty line. The vast majority are children and elderly. Of these, about 200,000 people live in “cage” or sub-divided flats. A “cage” home is exactly what it sounds like, and a sub-divided flat (apartment) happens with multiple families share an apartment in a residential or industrial building.

Hong Kong is one of the richest cities in the world, and home to some of the richest people in the world, and yet nearly 1/5 of the population lives in poverty. Maybe it’s time to rethink and adjust some of the systems that led us here…
