8. Since Christmas is right around the corner, I wanted to tell everyone about the religious community here in Hong Kong. The Basic Law of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Hong Kong guarantees religious freedom for all residents of Hong Kong. Although nearly 50 percent of the population identifies as irreligious, there are large communities of Buddhists, Taoists, Christians and Muslims. Christians account for about ten percent of the total population, Buddhists 20 percent and Taoists 15 percent. The majority of the Filipino domestic workers are Catholic while the majority of the Indonesian migrant workers are Muslim. My next post will discuss the Christmas experience in Hong Kong.
